Lifestyle: America’s Most Wanted…..Scholars

Ever so often I receive things in my inbox that people suggest I post on the site. Me and Gezee are extremely selective of what actually makes it to the site for you all to read but when I got this story from Smitty, a Meet The Fresh family member and contributer, I was totally blown away and excited by what I read. With all the flack that young black men have been taken lately, this story is a definite breath of fresh air. The 107 seniors at Urban Prep Academy have reason to celebrate for their recent, unprecedented, accomplishment. They have a 100% college acceptance rate!! That’s right….the all-black, all-male senior class has earned spots at 72 institutions of higher learning across the country. Chicago Public Schools chief Robert Huberman had this to say to the accomplished group: “All of you in the senior class have shown that what matters is perseverance, what matters is focus, what matters is having a dream and following that dream.” The school enforces a strict dress code consisting of black blazers, khaki pants, and red ties, but upon acceptance to an institute of higher learning, students are awarded with a red and gold tie and as you can see by the picture, the room was flooded with red and gold.
Footwear: Jean-Michel Basquiat x Reebok Collection

It’s been a while since Reebok has been relevant to me in the footwear industry but their new collection spells “comeback”, with the late-great Jean-Michel Basquiat being the theme for the Spring/Summer 2010 series, taking inspiration from Basquiat’s Untitled (Suite of Fourteen Drawings) from 1981. The son of a Haitian-American father and a Puerto Rican mother, Basquiat first gained notoriety as a teenage graffiti poet and musician. At the age of twenty, he had turned from spraying graffiti on the walls of buildings in Lower Manhattan to selling paintings in SoHo galleries. The line he inspired will feature Reebok staples such as the Omni Pump Lite, BB4600 Hi, and WMNS Pump Aerobic Lite Trainer Mid, and each shoe features it’s own graphic tee. The people at Reebok are definitely on the right track utilizing the inspiration of such an accomplished artist, and with Spring and Summer right around the corner, I’m sure we’ll be seing this line on the feet (and back) of fly people, everywhere. The collection will be launching later this month at selected Reebok retailers. Check the pics from the Spring/Summer Lookbook.
Random Thoughts: PAY THIS MAN – Part 2

In a previous episode, I discussed the monetary compensation that should be awarded to General Larry Platt for coming up with such a catchy tune. I don’t know if he ever got paid, but I’m an advocate of people getting their just due when deserved. With that said, let’s talk about my newest honoree for the “Pay This Man Honor”, Clifton Powell. I think this guy deserves a lifetime achievement award. I can’t count the amount of times that he’s stolen the show with one or two scenes in a movie. Who can forget his rant as Pinky in Next Friday? I wasn’t even used to seeing him give comedic performances but he was, by far, the funniest part of the movie, and since the movie industry has yet to recognize Mr. Powell for his longevity and consistency, I will, with a list of some of his most scene stealing roles:
Warning: Some scenes contain profanity
